Canucks have the makings for a championship team
After the Vancouver Canucks dominated the San Jose Sharks in Game 2 of their western conference series this week the final was 73 and it was one of those games where the score pretty much told the tale. I began to think,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], "We're looking at the 2011 Stanley Cup champions."
They still have to win six more games, and it's never easy, but the Canucks are slapping San Jose around without mercy,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and they seem to have gotten over the mental hump that had been holding them back. They can thank themselves for that, in a way. After nearly blowing a 30 series lead against Chicago, the Canucks look like a team that finally knows what it takes, they look like a team that understands that no matter how much they want it,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter how much they sacrifice, they can always find a little more to give.
They still haven't won anything and we all know that anything can happen, but if I had to bet fifty bucks right now on any team that is still standing in these playoffs, it would be Vancouver.
NonSports Thought of the Week: So long Mary Hart, you will be missed by someone I'm sure.
Golf Tip of the Week: It's important to dress well on the golf course. If you look good, you play good and all that (not really). Track pants or blue jeans and a tshirt with a big marijuana leaf emblazoned on the front might be all well and good in most social settings, but not while you're out golfing.
This is not an elitist point of view, it's just well. no one wants to see you in a tight muscle shirt with your belly hanging down around your knees. Conversely, you can overdo it, by being one of those people who turn into a walking endorsement for say, Nike. You've probably seen a guy like Marty out in your local sand trap or forests that surround the fairway: Nike clubs, balls, Nike shoes, shirts, pants, bumper sticker. Probably even has a cat named Nike if he has a cat, and I have a feeling he might. You don't have to dress in a tux, some decent slacks and a $20 golf shirt will do the trick.
The latest from the Pete Rose saga: the alltime hits leader in major league baseball history,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], kicked out of the game in 1989 for gambling on the game (He denied it for at least 15 years until he thought he might be better off admitting to it), is still wondering why he isn't allowed back in baseball. Rose wants to manage, you see, and never mind that he's been out of the game for 22 years, never mind that as a manager, he was not very good at it. (I've read over the years that he was horrible at managing a pitching staff. And, after the perennially underachieving Reds had to get a new manager for the 1990 season, Cincinnati would win the World Series that autumn). A great player does not necessarily make a good manager or coach, just look at Wayne Gretzky in Phoenix, or Mickey Mantle trying to manage a bigleague club. Failures, really.
But that's all beside the point. You can't gamble on baseball if you make a living in it, or the punishment should be and it is severe if you get caught because the integrity of the game has to be protected. Rose should be in the Hall of Fame for what he did on the field, but manage again? He's deluded if he thinks it'll ever happen.
Granted, Barry Bonds and Mark McGwire and all the other 'roiders have brought the game into disrepute and dragged it through the proverbial mud,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], there's no denying that. But gambling is not the same thing as drugs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], no matter what Rose might try to tell himself. Besides, McGwire and Bonds and those of their ilk haven't even tasted the worst of the punishment: that will come in another few years, when, if there's any justice at all, they will be denied entry into Cooperstown when they become eligible.
